The Swizz World number three last featured at the Australian open and missed the Miami open but needed only an hour and fifteen minutes to defeat his Spanish opponent and advance to the next round.

World number two, Andy Murray though was made to work harder but survived a three set win over French qualifier Pierre-Hughes Herbert 6-2,4-6,6-3.Giles Simon defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-4,6-3 while David Goffin had an impressive 7-5,6-0 win over Feliciano Lopez.Phillip Kohlschreiber defeated Borna Coric 6-4,6-4 ,there were also wins for Fernando Verdasco, Taro Daniel, Damir Dzumhur, Pablo Cuevas and Joao Sousa.
