The Super Eagles of Nigeria would not be at AFCON 2017 after losing to the Pharaohs of Egypt yesterday, March 30th 2016. The AFCON qualifier match which ended 1-0 in favor of the Egyptian side seals the fate of the Nigerian national team.
This proves the effectiveness of the Egyptian tactic, to get a draw in Nigeria and record a comfortable victory in their home. Before the match, the coach of the Egyptian side had assured the North Africans of victory over the Nigerian side. Though the Nigerian team also expressed optimism, the display of the team betrayed the pre-match words. The Eagles allowed the Egyptian side to dominate the game. The Egyptian dominance later resulted in a goal, scored by Ramadan Shoby in the 64th minute of the game. The goal came from an uncleared corner kick. After two attempts by the Egyptian side, 19 year old Shoby eventually found the back of the net.
The Group G game was the return leg match between the two African football giants. The Egyptian side managed to secure a draw from the first leg, with a late goal coming from Roma attacker, Mohamed Salah to strike out Nigeria’s opener. The goal turned out to be the albatross for Samson Siasia’s side, as it was expected of the three time AFCON champions to record a win.
Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for Africa’s top competition is a major disappointment for the team.
