The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said that deploying scientific innovations and technology can be helpful in Nigeria’s quest to attain economic diversification.
Onu who said this while receiving the Governor of Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar in Abuja urged state governments to set up ministries of science and technology in their states.
He said governments in the country must recognize the enormous role of science and technology could play in the lives of the citizenry.
The Minister stressed that science and technology when fully deployed, would help to improve the living standard of the people by moving them away from poverty in addition to availing the youths and elderly with workable skills.
According to him, the ministry through its efforts was affecting national lives in all areas of the economy including agriculture, manufacturing and even tourism, and would continue to do its bit to ensure that research becomes the driving force in every part of the country.
He said: “Nigerians must recognize that there is no way we can diversify our economy if we do not employ science and technology and that is why every administration since independence that has come in made that promise and that promise is always there we will diversify the economy but it has not happened, it has not worked.”
Onu therefore urged the visiting governor to establish a ministry in the state to oversee the development science and technology.
“I told the Governor of Bauchi State that I want him to establish a ministry of science and technology, it is very important that he does so because that ministry will help him to coordinate science and technology in the state. This is the direction and once he establishes the ministry of science of technology there are so many benefits.”
