We all remember the memorable Atlanta 96 Olympics final, which saw now National U-20 team coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, sealing the win for Nigeria with his goal against Argentina, yes we all do, well now, Amuneke, has come out to expressed optimism about the present U-23 squad to the Olympic Games in Brazil.

According to Amuneke, he believes a repeat of the victorious Atlanta 96, will again come into play, as he professed his believe in the Samson Siasia led team.

Amuneke, however, made sure to note that the win might to a piece of cake for the players, but added that absolutely nothing can prove that the team may not repeat the Atlanta Olympics feat.

We have to be realistic about our chances too. It is not going to be an easy task, but the coach (Samson Siasia) is experienced.

He was in charge when Nigeria won the silver medal in 2008 and also led the team to second at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2005.

In 1996, we had a very experienced team with a lot of talented players most of whom had also played at the FIFA World Cup in 1994. I’m not saying that the players we have now are not talented, but I think winning tournaments these days is not only about talent.

But there is nothing to say that Nigeria cannot repeat the feat of 1996. It was a beautiful thing that we laid the foundation and others have followed our path, and I think our current team can repeat that success.

For the group stage of the Rio games, Nigeria will face Japan, Sweden and Colombia.
