Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has downplayed the controversy surrounding Pedro‘s comment about not starting for the national team, saying there was nothing unusual about it.
Pedro was angry at playing a bit part role for the Spanish National team and lashed out, saying “I had other expectations when I arrived here and it hasn’t been what I wanted,” the former Barcelona star said. “To take this role [as a substitute] is difficult for me, so If I don’t have continuity then I don’t think is worth it to keep coming to [the national team] just to be part of the group.”
Gerrard Pique though has defended his former Barcelona teammate, saying “They were comments from a football player who wants to play more,” Pique said. “This is normal. We remain together. We are a family.”

Pedro explained himself to Del Bosque after his comments to the Spanish media but the coach said he understood his frustration.
“We talked and he said he didn’t want to create any problems with anybody,” Del Bosque said. “He only expressed his feelings. It’s natural to have some discrepancy within the 12 players who don’t get to play. There was nothing to it. We are not going to be tough on him because of this.”
