“The club can confirm a deal has been agreed to sign Bernardo Espinosa to Boro when the defender’s contract expires at Spanish side Sporting Gijon.
The 26-year-old centre-half is set to join the club on July 1 and will become Aitor Karanka’s second signing of the summer with Viktor Fischer having agreed a move to Teesside from Ajax.
Espinosa has made over 90 appearances for Sporting Gijon since joining from Sevilla in 2013 and has had a previous loan spell at Racing Santander.
The highly-rated Colombian has opted for a move to Boro despite reported interest from other Premier League clubs including Everton, Bournemouth and Watford”.
