Manchester United are set to take on old foes Galatasaray in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s homeland the club has confirmed.
Jose Mourinho has pencilled in a friendly against the Turkish giants in Sweden on July 30 with United expected to confirm further details on Thursday.
The friendly will be played at Gothenburg’s 43,200-capacity Ullevi Stadium and comes as Mourinho puts the finishing touches to his plans ahead of his first campaign at the club.United will fly out on the morning of the game and return to Manchester that evening.Mourinho, expected to be unveiled on Tuesday next week, takes his new squad to China, where they will take on Borussia Dortmund (July 22) and Manchester City (July 25).
United executive vice chairman, Ed Woodward, said: ‘The team has a valuable combination of domestic and overseas games against tough European opposition.Playing games across a number of countries allows our tremendous fans the opportunity to watch the team play, and importantly the number of games allows the manager and team the best opportunity to prepare for the coming season.’
Ibrahimovic, 34, who started his career at Malmo, is expected to sign for United following the expiration of his current contract at Paris Saint-Germain.United’s rivalry with Galatasaray exploded into life in the early 1990s with fiery Champions League clashes in back-to-back seasons.They faced each other again in the same tournament in 2012, with United winning at Old Trafford and Galatasaray triumphing in Turkey.
