Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has agreed a deal to become the new manager of second division side, Reading.
Reports says the deal is for a year with an additional one, should he be a success at the club. The 43-year-old has been the favourite with the bookmakers since Brian McDermott was sacked by Reading on Friday, May 27.Rumours surfaced at the time that Stam held talks with Reading representatives but denied by his agent Henk Van Ginkel .
Stam has previously expressed an interest in working in England , having been a coach at various sides in the Netherlands, including Ajax.He told Dutch media: “I do not think you have to start as a trainer necessarily in the Netherlands. Why could you not start abroad? That may not immediately be in the Premier League, it could be in the Championship or League One.
“There are big clubs in between, where you can really start building something. I have already discussed this at home and the family wants it – if it comes to that. It’s not that I do not want to work in the Netherlands but going abroad is my preference.”
