Everton‘s new manager Ronald Koeman has been unveiled at the club.The former Southampton manager faced questions from the press and here are some of the extracts from the interview;
Koeman on arriving;
To be involved in this project for the next couple of years is a big feeling. I will keep it short on Southampton as it is important to look forward in life. I had a meeting with the board – the first option was to go into the third year of my contract, and I said that was not possible. There was no way I was signing a new contract and I did not agree. Through that whole story, Everton showed that kind of interest. Southampton gave me the permission to talk to Everton and I’m the new manager – and that’s all I would like to say. Thanks to them, we had two fantastic seasons – thanks to the players, staff and fans, but I’m in Everton now.
If they sell that ambition to grow, to win. Everybody knows the history of Everton. It’s a big history and it’s nice to be part of that, to win and play European cup football and win titles. Everyone is ready to take the next step and I’m one of them.
On Godisson Park;
Everybody is hungry. The fans want us to put Everton in the place where they need to stay, and we will do everything to take the next step. It’s a fantastic stadium, a typical English stadium with a great atmosphere, and you need to be the boss in your stadium. That’s what we want to change.
On the fans;
We will be a team that gives the fans nice things to do. It’s about getting the right spirit in the team, a strong spirit. You need to win to keep everyone behind the team. But of course, the feeling I have from the first second from the chairman and Farhad, and the people who I met this morning, it’s like a family. That’s the basic need of a football club. But it’s also about results in football, I’m used to that, that’s not the problem and I’m looking forward to the start of the season.
On players leaving;
It’s not so difficult. I know that experience, I had that experience at Southampton – always a lot of interest in the players. Like everybody, we want to keep our key players, you don’t sell your best players. But that’s about meetings, we will see what happens.
On his playing style;
Every manager has his own style, I like the fans to enjoy it but I also like to win the game. I’m not a coach or a manager to wait. I play to win the game, it’s the style I like, it’s the spirit we like to have in the team. That’s the way how I want to manage Everton.
I haven’t spoken to Romelu. From this moment, I’m working for Everton and I will talk to several players. Lukaku is a key player, a goalscorer, you don’t want to lose your best players. If I can do something about that, I will.
