Poland won the battle of the two Euro 2012 co-hosts, with Jakub Blaszczykowski’s 54th-minute goal all it needed to deliver Ukraine a third defeat at Euro 2016. As a result, Poland finishes second in the group. It finished with the same amount of points as Germany, but the reigning World Cup champions take first because of goal differential.

Poland nearly scored twice in the opening minutes, with Robert Lewandowski putting a golden opportunity over the bar. The Bayern Munich star ended the group stage without scoring. Blaszczykowski delivered the winner in impressive fashion, though, cutting back on two defenders and curling a left-footed effort in from close range. Poland’s defense held on against a Ukraine side that didn’t score in its group matches and goes home without a point.
