The first set was uncomfortable for Djokovic, who looked ill at ease and needed 40 minutes to clinch it. But thereafter it was a cruise for the Serbian, who completed victory in an hour and 29 minutes with an impudent drop shot.Djokovic has been beaten three times in the finals at Roland Garros, including his upset by Stan Wawrinka last year, as he bids to become only the eighth player in history to complete a career grand slam.’Of course people are very eager to find out whether or not I can make it this year, and that kind of anticipation existed and it was present also in the last couple of years.’.

Next up for the Serbian is a clash with Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis, who defeated Marsel Ilhan 6-3 6-4 6-0.The 11-time grand slam winner has been handed a relatively comfortable draw before being scheduled to meet nine-times French Open champion Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.Defending champion Stan Wawrinka also suffered a first-round scare and will return to action against Japanese player Taro Daniel.

Fifth seed Kei Nishikori had no such problems as he swept aside Simone Bolelli in straight sets to secure a meeting with Andrey Kuznetsov on another packed day of matches in Paris.Canadian Milos Raonic and French duo Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon are other notable names in the men’s draw who are due to appear on court on Wednesday.

Serena Williams made a blistering start to the defence of her French Open title and saw potential rivals Victoria Azarenka and Angelique Kerber fall at the first hurdle.

Williams was helped by the fact her opponent Magdalena Rybarikova was clearly injured and wasted no time in securing a 6-2 6-0 victory that lasted just 42 minutes.
