FOOTBALL: UEFA Champions League Preview

As the Champions league second legs gets underway later today,we preview the games as they will be panning out today and tomorrow.

Realmadrid vs Wolfsburg (0-2)

This game last week proved to us the saying ‘This is football, anything can happen’ as Wolfsburg not only defeated Realmadrid, but did it well by putting themselves in a good stead to qualify for the next round with a surprising 2-0 win.Fact is, Realmadrid were in shambles in that game and didn’t get anything right. The first goal was as a result of clumsiness from Casemiro’s path which led to a penalty, the second goal was from a good work from Draxler who tormented Danilo all day, and just when you think Realmadrid was going to respond in the second half,Wolfsburg held their own and didn’t concede on their home ground, making it a very tough task for Realmadrid to qualify.Realmadrid though would be buoyed from their 4-0 win over the weekend while Wolfsburg rested enough players for this match and drew 1-1 against Mainz.Realmadrid needs Bale-Benzema-Cristiano at their best to win this.Expect Realmadrid to come all out and expect Wolfsburg to hit on the counter.Any team that does it well goes through.

Manchester City vs PSG (2-2)

Mancity wouldn’t have had a better result than the 2-2 they had last week over the French champions and they would be looking to build on their impressive performance in the first leg. Both teams are coming off a win over the weekend with PSG having an impressive 2-0 win over Guingamp while Mancity battled back to win 2-1over WestBrom with both teams fielding mixed sides in preparation for this game.Fact is,this game means a lot for both sides as Mancity would be looking to improve their reputation in Europe while an exit for PSG would probably be regarded as a failure as they would’ve been looking to improve on their previous semi-final exit or at least equal their semi-final appearance from last season. Both teams also have a full squad fit for this game as PSG has confirmed the availability of Marco Veratti for this game while although Vincent Kompany has been ruled out, Samir Nasri has returned from injury and even contributed with the winning goal over the weekend.Expect PSG to take this game to Mancity and try and score an early goal to kill Mancity’s spirit while Mancity will likely be a bit more conservative and depend on the brilliance of De Bruyne and David Silva going forward.I just feel both teams will score but it will be tough in the end for whoever goes through.

Benfica vs Bayern Munich (0-1)

Many expected a blow out win for Bayern munich in the first leg at the Allianz Arena but in truth, opposite would have been the case had Benfica taken their chances.Vidal scored the only goal in the second minute of the game and from thence,Bayern munich just couldn’t break down Benfica’s resilience and were most times almost caught out a number of times on the counter. They both had good wins over the weekend with Benfica winning 2-1 while Bayern munich won 3-1 against their opponents and would be looking to give the world a good game.Expect Benfica to take this game to Bayern munich but then,in the end,i just feel Pep Guardiola’s side would be too strong for them.

Athletico Madrid vs Barcelona (1-2)

This is definately going to be one hell of a game.It is games like this an individual brilliance is required to win. After going 39 matches unbeaten,Barcelona has now lost two of their last three games and truely,it could’ve been worse for them had Torres not gotten a red card with Athletico Madrid 1-0 up.Barcelona came back to win 2-1 but truely, they only started playing their real game after Athletico were already down to ten men.Expect Barcelona to react early and try to get that early away goal, expect Athletico Madrid to cover every blade of grass on the field, frustrate Barcelona and probably get a goal anytime during the game and close up shop.On the positive side for Athletico Madrid, Barcelona are vulnerable in defence and their forward line can cause them problems. On the positive side for Barcelona, they have Messi-Suarez-Neymar (MSN) who can apply their individual brilliance any time during the game.I expect a very tough game which could eventually go into extra time.May the best team qualify.
