FOOTBALL: Ten Things We Learnt In The Premier League This Weekend

It was yet another action packed weekend of premier league football with Arsenal sharing the spoils with West Ham, Manutd and Chelsea were the losing sides respectively,Liverpool and Manchester City winning their games.

From all the action packed performance on the pitch this weekend, here  are ten things we learnt from the games.

1. Has Andy Caroll played himself into Roy Hodgson’s thoughts?

As much as it was a battling display from the whole Westham team to come back to force a 2-2 draw before finally ending the game 3-3,it wouldn’t have been possible without an embattled Andy Caroll who tore Arsenal’s defence throughout the game.He scored two goals in two minutes after Arsenal had raced through to a 2-0 lead and then scored what he thought would be the winning goal to make it 3-2 before Arsenal clawed back to draw the game.Fact is, noone else offers the kind of aerial power, strength and hustle he offers and it could be a good weapon for Hodgson who would’ve been watching with keen interest to take his best legs to the tournament. Definately more selection headache for the England coach.

2. Mancity getting their mojo back, and at the right time.

Mancity went four games on the trot without victory but last weekend, went to Bournemoth and won 4-0 against all odds, went to PSG in the Champions league and draw 2-2 against all odds and although they struggled against Westbrom over the weekend and that was largely due to them keeping an eye on their return leg this week, they still battled back to defeat Westbrom 2-1.The good news is,players are coming back from injury at the right time when they have a tough running of keeping themselves in the top four in the EPL and sustaining a good run in the Champions league.De Bruyne, Nasri are back and Vincent Kompany is expected to be fit for the game on Tuesday. They’re winning games, players are coming back from injury, good for them in their running for the top four in the EPL and Champions league

3. Has Benitez had any positive effect on this Newcastle team?

I was watching this Newcastle’s game against Southampton over the weekend and it was all drab.No style,no pattern, nothing. The defense was total shambles, the midfield was crashing in numbers and the striker was real starved of football. He still hasn’t had a single win in about three games and it doesn’t look like they are close to getting one.He has a clause in his contract though which indicates he leaves if he doesn’t save them from relegation, and from what i saw,he should be preparing to back his bags at the end of the season because this team doesn’t look like surviving this relegation battle except a miracle happens.

4.Chelsea needs a squad re-shuffle.

It still comes as a surprise that John Terry is allowed to leave at the end of the season when his presence alone drives this Chelsea team.Swansea finally got an EPL win against them and it was well deserved.Chelsea were very poor.I was watching Maizga for the first time and he looked very ordinary, run ragged by Paloschi and Jefferson Montero before he was substituted in the second half and Mikel went to the centre back position.Upfront again, their attack was toothless.Without Diego Costa, their attack barely has dimension. Pato isn’t who he was anymore,Falcao should be playing somewhere in the US or somewhere,Bertrand Traore isn’t the kind of striker to lead you anywhere.Hazard too hasn’t found his bearing.Asides Willian, Fabregas and just a few others, this squad right now is too inbalanced. Conte has quite some work on his hands.

5. Aston Villa should be mathematically relegated next weekend

Villa yet again couldn’t get a win and yes, it’s normal, we’re used to it, they’ve been crap all season. They’re not mathematically relegated because none of Newcastle, Sunderland and Norwich could get a win.Loosing at home to Bournemoth yet again summed up their season.Their next game – they go to oldtrafford to play Manchester United. With five games to play, they should be using the remaining games to prepare themselves for life in the Championship next season.

6. Crystal Palace finally get an EPL win in 2016.

With their 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Norwich City, they became the last team in all four-tier leagues in England to get a win and it wasn’t still routine for them. They hard to work hard and rely on the individual brilliance of Jason Puncheon to get the goal and keep tight at the back to come off with the win to the relief of the fans.Palace had already been dragged to the relegation struggle and the board were already questioning Alan Pardew but the win will be a boost for the team as they look to cement their place in the EPL for next season.

7. Leicester City matching on.

What more can i say of this Leicester team? They just keep getting the job done anyhow. They’ve now won five of their last six games on the trot, the draw against Westbrom the only place they dropped points and they just find ways to grind out victories. Most of their victories has been 1-0, scoring and closing up shop perfectly. The team is fighting ‘together’, relying on all eleven players to grind on victory. In their game against Sunderland, Vardy made the headlines for scoring both goals but Kante was man-of-the-match for his tireless play not for the umpteenth time this season.Their rollacosta season is still an unbelievable reality.

8. Is Divock Origi finally fulfilling his potential at Liverpool?

He signed for Liverpool from Lille last last two years as a young lad with promise but really struggled to impose himself in the team, leading people to ask why he was bought in the first place but fast forward a year plus,Divock Origi is been entrusted to lead the line for Liverpool in their most important European game of the year against Bourissia Dortmund.Putting Sturridge and Benteke to bench, yes you heard me right. He tormented the Dortmund’s defence all through the game, scoring an all important goal to force an important draw and in their game against Stoke this weekend,he came on in the second half and scored two good goals. Origi is playing well and showing Jurgen Klopp reasons to make him pilot the Liverpool attack.I think he’s finally fulfilling his potential at the club, which is also good for Belgium, heading into the Euros.

9. Tottenham not giving up just yet.

It was an extremely cagey affair against Manchester united but they finally got the job done. They fought extremely hard, scoring the first goal in the 70th minute of the game through some school boy defending from Manutd and in the next five minutes scored two more goals to seal up the victory and pile more pressure on Leicester City. They now close the gap to Leicester city to seven points and open a six points lead over Arsenal with five games remaining to play in the EPL.

10. Van Gaal’s tactical knowledge is questionable; Timothy Fosu Mensah has a bright future

LVG must be commended for integrating young stars into the Manchester United first team but some of his decisions are highly questionable.Against Tottenham, there was a farce, with the game even at 0-0, Manutd were to make a substitution, on came Young, off went Rashford, that came as a surprise, but the biggest surprise came in the positioning,Young was asked to play as a centre forward while the natural centre forward, Martial, stuck to the wings. This was appalling, Manutd fans, even the commentators were baffled by the decision.Sometimes, i ask myself if we see the game better on TV than those on the field. This is just one of his many awful decisions he’s made since taking charge at Manutd. On the bright side,TFM was so excellent immediately he went off, Man Utd conceded three goals. That was just how awesome he was.If he continues he way he’s currently playing,he’ll surely be a great player in the future for Manchester United.
