Realmadrid lost a vital ground in their hope of making it into the Champions league semi-final Wolfsburg after loosing 2-0 to their less than fancied rivals Wolfsburg.Madrid who many expected would’ve been confident, coming after an impressive away win against rivals Barcelona were brought back down to earth and would have a lot to do to turn around the result.
Madrid started brightly with Bale and Ronaldo running the channels. Ronaldo had the ball in the net but was harshly flagged offside when he looked level with the last defender and Bale cut in from the right and had a penalty claim turned down. He then popped up on the left to cross for Ronaldo at the near post only for Diego Benaglio to smother at the Portuguese forward’s his feet.Wolfsburg threatened on the break and when Draxler got away down the left he crossed and Bruno Henrique tested Keylor Navas with a volley.Real still had the early control and it was only being broken by Draxler’s running down the Madrid right. It was from another of his breakaways that Wolfsburg’s goal came. He crossed for André Schürrle who appeared to trip himself up under pressure from Casemiro and referee Gianluca Rocchi pointed to the spot. The penalty was debatable but the execution was not with Ricardo Rodriguez emphatically sending Navas the wrong way.It ended Navas’ 736 minutes without conceding in the Champions League and no sooner had Madrid let in their first goal of the tournament than the second one arrived. Then came the second goal, Draxler again dazzled down the left with no one closing him down,He switched the play to the right where Henrique crossed for Maximilian Arnold to score past Navas.
Just as Wolfsburg were looking for Draxler at every opportunity so Real Madrid were picking out Bale as often as they could and his whipped cross from the left found the head of Ronaldo but he could not beat Benaglio. He was not having his greatest night after Saturday’s winner in the Camp Nou. Ronaldo won a free-kick on the edge of the area but fired it straight into the Wolfsburg wall. All in all,Madrid looked battered,Draxler ran Danilo ragged and Wolfsburg showed they should have neverr been written off.
Manchester City also proved they should be a force to be reckoned with in the Champions league this season as they battled back to claim a vital 2-2 draw in Paris. David Silva could have put them ahead after 21 minutes, on the end of a lovely cross by Jesus Navas. Whipped in from the right, avoiding the first man,who often seems to have a target on his chest when Navas is crossing,it fell for Silva, who got in a tangle directing his header goalwards, missing the goal completely. So it was De Bruyne who put City ahead shortly before half-time.City looked energised by his return and he was the player who capitalised on a rare mistake by Blaise Matuidi after 38 minutes. Fernandinho cut out his pass and fed the ball swiftly to De Bruyne on the right. He cut inside David Luiz, had a clear sight at goal and whooped the ball into the net. So when Hart played the softest pass out to Fernando on the edge of the area on 41 minutes,Fernando lost focus and in trying to clear the ball,it rebounded off Ibrahimovic’s boot and into an empty net.PSG was then awwarded a penalty after Sagna was adjourned to have tripped David Luiz in the box, a penalty which Ibrahimovic stepped up to take but was saved by Joe Hart.
Then came the second half with both teams trying to get the breakthrough, and then it came, Eliaquim Mangala almost putting into his own net trying to deal with a Maxwell cross, and City were slow at the corner. Edinson Cavani won the first header, Hart pushed it out and Fernandinho was slugging in reacting, Adrien Rabiot stealing in to finish at close range. Yet salvation came from PSG’s equally fallible defence. Sagna overlapped down the right only for Serge Aurier to lose his footing dealing with the cross, his clearance clipped a baffled Thiago Silva and Fernandinho slipped in to score.
With all the games now evenly poised apart from the Realmadrid game where they have an uphill task,it sure promises to be yet another interesting second legs in the race for the semi-finals in the Champions league 2016.
