Aguero who became the first South American to score a centurion of goals in the premier league scored after fourteen minutes after heading in a rather controversial goal from an offside position.was a personal milestone for Aguero, his 100th Premier League goal in his 147th appearance, the second fastest to that total Alan Shearer is first, in 124 games and the only South American in a select club. It showed the class that sets the top goalscorers apart. Newcastle did very well against Aguero for most of the match, but he needs just one chance, or one good break. But Vurnon Anita equalized after about half an hour with a swift counter attack after Sissoko broke down the left and with the home fans now in full cry, Vurnon Anita was inspired to mirror his run with a sprint down the right.Sissoko spotted him and hit a magnificent crossfield ball, switching the play for Anita to collected it, cut inside past Kolarov, and then hit a low rasping shot beyond Joe Hart.

This was Newcastle as they so rarely were under Steve McClaren, indeed as they should have been all season. Lively, fast, energetic, dangerous, a team capable of inspiring, and being inspired by, the crowd. Yes, they remain prone to defensive lapses but Benitez is a coach, not a wizard, and the fact that it was Manchester City hanging on at the end speaks volumes for his impact here in a short space of time.

With two minutes remaining, substitute Georginio Wijnaldum got the better of Aleksandar Kolarov and was suddenly through on goal. For a moment, it looked as if this could be the turning point of the season, but Joe Hart came flying off his line to make an outstanding save. With another few weeks in charge of this team, Newcastle might just have got away with it. If Benitez had enjoyed a lengthier run at galvanising this group of players, Newcastle might have achieved sufficient momentum to stay up. And if they are a Premier League team next season, Benitez is likely to stay.

However, City have yet to secure a top-four spot to book a place in Europe’s top competition next season and would probably have been distracted by having to play three games in just eight days especially vital champions league game against Realmadrid, but while they were not at their best, they certainly applied plenty of pressure.
