It was a game they had to win convincingly to advance to the finals of the competition after they were dealt a late blow through an Adruiz goal in the first leg of the semi-finals last week.

Liverpool like they’ve always done in the knockout stages, knocked Augsburg, Manchester United, Dortmund and now Villareal to advance to the finals. It was a tough one though, but they grind out the victory, winning convincingly with a 3-0 scoreline to advance to the finals.

“I do not have the right words for this performance – the whole performance – from 6.45pm when we drove through the roads. What power for the first 30 minutes. The will was obvious. In the second half it was emotional and smart. They were wonderful goals and it was well deserved” said Klopp.

Klopp had conducted the Kop choir from the final whistle at El Madrigal last week, firing up The Kop to create a ferocious atmosphere. However, the manager emphasised how this win was about more than raised voices, the Liverpool players giving a performance of intensity and tactical astuteness.”Everyone spoke a lot about this team before I came here. It was all about quality and not good transfers,” he said.“I came here because I thought they had a nice squad and now we are in the final. To reach a final you need a bit of luck but most of all outstanding performances. This year the team showed a lot what they are capable of and what they could be in the future and that’s a really good sign. That’s more important for me as a manager but when you perform like we did tonight or against Dortmund, Manchester United or Augsburg. It’s a great opportunity and we will take it”.

Liverpool will get a mere 10,000 tickets for the Basle final against current holders Sevilla, but Klopp knows the Swiss city will be swamped by the Merseyside contingent.“We will take 50,000, 60,000 maybe not in the stadium 100,000. It is a nice city,” said Klopp.

The final will take place on the 18th of May in Switzerland with Liverpool taking on Sevilla who defeated Shaktar Doneskt 3-1 to run out 5-3 winners on aggregate.
