FOOTBALL: 10 Things We Learnt In The Premier League This Weekend

Following an impressive premier league weekend in the Premier league with Sunderland,Liverpool,Mancity all getting impressive wins with Chelsea,Westbrom and Norwich loosing at home, here are ten things we learnt this weekend in the premier league

John Moss got virtually every decision wrong in the Leicester city vs Westham game
John Moss got virtually every decision wrong in the Leicester city vs Westham game

1.Sunderland got a timely impressive win

It was definately a game both teams had to win with both teams lying in 17th and 18th respectively on the table. It was tense from the onset as both teams tried to break eachother down but in the end like i said earlier, the intelligence in Sunderland’s attacking prowess prevailed.Defoe got the first goal when his outstretched legs met a cross from the right and into the net.The second goal was a penalty after Borini was felled in the box,he stood up and dispatched the penalty himself.Norwich tried all they could but they couldn’t break down a resolute Sunderland defence until Watmore sealed all three points with a goal late on in the game. Both teams have to kick on as ttheir next games are against teams in the top half of the table.Good one for Sunderland though as a win in their game in hand will put them ahead of Norwich. The relegation battle rumbles on.

2. Depay didn’t prove himself;he’d return to the bench

It was Astonvilla at oldtrafford and many were obviously expecting a makeshift team against a team rooted to the bottom.Depay started and needed to make a statement to return to the first team after been left on the bench and on the evidence of his display,he didn’t show enough to retain his place in the team. His inability to perform outside the left wing is also an issue for the Dutch international as he has struggled to keep up pace with the EPL and his decision making often lets him down especially in the final third.Martial’s impressive performances has also become a factor and Depay would have to do a lot to win his place back in the team despite coming with a lot of promises over the summer.

3. Astonvilla finally relegated

It had been a matter of time before it was confirmed and as Lescott confirmed during the week, the confirmation of relegation now lifts the weight off the players shoulder. It has definately been an horrible season for the team.Although they put in quite an impressive performance against Manutd,it was still the same old story as they just couldnt get the goals needed. In the premier league, you need goals to survive. After 28 straight years in the league, they finally head back to the second tier of English football and will hope to be back as soon as possible.

4. Rafael Benitez finally gets a win

Its been a tough time for Benitez since taking over from McClaren to try and save Newcastle from relegation. He finally had his first win over the weekend and quite impressively too.Swansea was coming off an impressive win over Chelsea and people expected them to cause Newcastle some problems but the opposite was the case.Newcastle ran out 3-0 winners to the delight of their fans. The first and second goals cam from corners which Swansea wasn’t able to properly clear and the third goal, a good one from Townsend.Another positive though,Newcastle didn’t concede, closing the gap at the bottom to Sunderland and Norwich in the relegation battle.

5. How did Hurelho Gomez do that !!!!!

With Watford 1-0 up,Westbrom was awarded a penalty and Saido Berahino stepped up,he shot the ball to the left hand side and Gomez dived to save it.Later in the game,Westbrom was again awarded a penalty and Saido Berahino stepped up and hit it low to his far right and Hurelho Gomez got down again to make a smart save again, preserving Watford’s lead till the end.Fact is,ive seen keepers save penalties during games but saving two in the same game from the same player !!!,ive never seen.Nice one Hurelho,Fantastic achievement.

6. Kevin De Bruyne has been the key to Mancity’s revival

They moved from winning one game in five matches between Febuary and March,to winning four games in five matches between March and April.Their only draw, coming in an impressive performance away from home against PSG.This though has come since Kevin De Bruyne returned from injury. He was rejected by Chelsea, showed his mettle at Wolfsburg and came back to the EPL with a point to prove and he’s been fantastic. In the game against Chelsea,he was the driving force all through the game contributing to the first goal and playing a part in the second goal to silent the Stamford bridge faithfuls.Mancity definatelyhave a gem in their hands in De Bruyne.

7. Chelsea were pathetic yet again

Chelsea welcomed back Diego Costa and their fans were delighted to welcome their top striker in such an important game.Their fans were obviously expecting a response from their dismal performance over Swansea last weekend but the players weren’t just up for it.Mancity got one in the first half but it could have been more.Hart didn’t really have much to do all through while Courtois was tested time and time again until he was sent-off for a rash challenge on Fernandinho which led in Aguero grabbing his hattrick.Hopefully this season is a one-off and they start perfecting plans to bounce back under Antonio Conte next season.

8. How does Arsenal keep bottling situations like this???

It was a vintage Arsenal performance with crisp passing and intelligent movement of the ball. They managed to get the first goal in the tail end of the first half with Sanchez nooding in a perfect ball from Welbeck and in the second half, they did all the playing but couldn’t get that vital second goal to kill off the game.Arsene Wenger even seemed to have given up hope of a second goal by bringing off attack minded Iwobi for Ramsey and it came back to haunt them.Adebayor who had been booed all game held the ball well on the left before feeding the ball to Bolasie who cut inside the right and sent a rasping shot into the net.Arsenal yet again failed to close the gap over Leicester city who had dropped points earlier and would now hope Tottenham drop points in their game tomorrow. How Arsenal keep bottling these situations baffle me.

9. Liverpool’s impressive form continues

It wasn’t a vintage Liverpool performance but they got the job done.Firmino got the first goal in the 41st minute and Sturridge got the second late in the first half.Although Joshua King got a goal back,it was merely a consolation. This was a game where Liverpool made ten changes to the side which defeated Bourissia Dortmund 4-3 in midweek. It didn’t affect them though as they got the impressive win and continue to match on in the Jurgen Klopp spirit after yet another impressive 4-1 win over Stoke city last weekend.

10. Jon Moss was terrible.

The inconsistency in premier league refreeing is becoming alarming.Jamie Vardy was fouled although partially in the box, most times, its a -no penalty- decision but Vardy was sent off for what he seemed was diving.Westham was then awarded a penalty, Jon Moss insisting Wes Morgan was holding Reid in the box in a set piece and i ask, Why now? We see this thing everyday in the league and if a penalty was to be awarded for such, we’d see it in every game. It’s premier league, its a physical game and we enjoy it like that. And just to appease the Leicester city fans who had been booing the refree all along,he finally awards an undeserved penalty which Leicester city used to finally level up the game.It will be interesting to see how the premier league reacts to the matter.
