The Brazil defender left for Paris Saint-Germain in June 2014 for £50million, a world record fee for a defender, but is ready to return to west London.Chelsea have been frustrated in their search for a centre back, having had bids turned down for Alessio Romagnoli at AC Milan and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

Leicester have agreed a club record fee of €35m (£30m) with Sporting Lisbon for Islam Slimani, with the Algeria striker due to fly to England on Wednesday to complete a medical.Negotiations appeared to have reached an impasse when the Portuguese side insisted they would not sell their top scorer of last season for less than €40m. Slimani, who scored 27 times in the Portuguese league last season as Sporting finished as runners-up behind Benfica, will now leave Algeria’s training camp as they prepare for their African Nations Cup qualifier against Lesotho to sign for the Premier League champions.
