Howbeit, goalkeeper David De Gea has had another spectacular season, winning the club’s fans player of the year award and narrowly missing out on the golden gloves award. The Spanish international is understandably pleased with his efforts, although he stressed that the campaign would not feel complete unless United secure the FA Cup with victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley.

‘It’s been the best season of my career,’ he said. ‘I’m in great shape physically and mentally I’m very focused. If we win the FA Cup it will be a good season. We are all really keen to win such an important trophy for this club, our supporters and ourselves. We will fight to the end and do everything we can to win it. ‘We’ve had a couple of difficult seasons so we are really determined to win the cup,’ he said.’And winning it could provide us with that extra belief and motivation to hopefully go on and achieve great things.’

Looking ahead to the game, he said ‘everyone has their opinion. If I had to listen to all the opinions about me, my head would explode. So I just focus on my job, the manager, my team-mates, the club.I know when I do bad and good. I’m not a dirty player. People can think whatever they want. I never injured a player. Never. I just react. Maybe sometimes I am impulsive, I say that. It’s my character. But when someone pulls your hair, it’s normal to react. For this situation I don’t deserve to be punished.
