A French citizen screaming “Allahu Akbar” killed one and critically injuring another during a violent rampage at a backpackers hostel in north Queensland.
English victim, Mia Ayliffe-Chung, aged 21, was killed during the frenzied and brutal attack.
According to reports she had only been in Townsville for a short period of time doing various farm work in the region.
Ayliffe-Chung was a former waitress at The Bedroom, a nightclub on the Gold Coast for the past six months.
Distraught staff at The Bedroom said the slain UK backpacker was intending to return to the Gold Coast after completing the required three-month fruit-picking stint which was a requirement for her to extend her working visa.
The nightclub will be closed tonight as a gesture of respect to their deceased colleague, as stunned co-workers come to grips with her sudden passing.
It’s alleged the French citizen brutally stabbed Ayliffe-Chung to death and left a British man, 31, fighting for his life following the vicious attack.
More than 30 stunned witnesses saw the knife attack at Shelley’s Backpackers in Home Hill at approximately 11.15pm on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, police said the offender yelled threats of extremist nature at backpackers and police.
“It is alleged the suspect used the phrase ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attack and when arrested by police”, QPS Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said.
“There is no known ongoing threat to the community as a result of this incident.”
