Borussia Dortmund are close to announcing that a deal has been done for Mario Gotze, Bild report. They’re paying Bayern Munich €28 million for the attacker and he’s agreed to sign a five-year contract with his former son. The prodigal son returns.
Having only turned 24 last month, Gotze’s best years are presumably still ahead of him. Before switching to the Allianz Arena, he was being called Germany’s Lionel Messi. While the last three years have been largely fruitless, Gotze did manage to score the winning goal in a World Cup final. As crises go, it’s not that bad. He’ll slot into the position previously occupied by Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Bayern lured him away from Dortmund in 2013 but the move simply hasn’t worked out.Gotze was never a favourite for Pep Guardiola and didn’t feature in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans either.
There was no shortage of escape routes. Spurs and Liverpool, managed by his old boss Jurgen Klopp, were interested. However, the chance to return to his former safe haven and right some wrongs was too good to turn down.
