Boro are closing in on former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes.Club chiefs have been talking over the details of a stunning switch to Teesside for the Spanish shot-stopper with an awesome pedigree.
Valdes, 34, is a free agent after his ill-fated move to Manchester United ended last week. And while he has also been approached by both Turkish club Besiktas and Sporting Lisbon, talks for a move to newly-promoted Boro are understood to be at an advanced stage.
It is believed manager Aitor Karanka and keeping coach Leo Percovich were in Barcelona last week to sway the medal-laden keeper to picking Boro ahead of others. And the move has gathered momentum now with the Hurworth hierarchy in talks with Valdes’ representatives.
He signed for Manchester United in January 2014 in the expectation that David De Gea would switch to Real Madrid but that fell through and he was left on the fringes at Old Trafford and played just twice then fell out with new boss Louis van Gaal.
He played eight times for Belgian side Standard Liege last season and won the Belgian Cup before the stint was cut short.
