Barcelona have chosen Jasper Cillessen as a replacement for Claudio Bravo, Mundo Deportivo reports.
The Ajax and Holland number one was one of several candidates on a shortlist created by the Spanish champions. Valencia stopper Diego Alves and Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina were also reportedly considered by the Barca board.
Bravo has not left the club yet but appears to be on his way to Manchester City.
Luis Enrique would rather keep him at the Camp Nou. After all, Pep Guardiola wants to sign the Chilean because he’s been consistently brilliant for years. Bravo is beginning to feel undermined by rival Marc-Andre ter Stegen and wants to play in the Champions League.
Enrique has rotated his goalkeepers since taking charge in 2014, playing Bravo in La Liga and ter Stegen in the cup competitions. Given that he’s literally won everything during his reign, it’s paid off. But both goalkeepers have expressed their discontent in having to miss out on huge parts of the campaign.
It’s unclear what Cillessen’s role will be at Barcelona. Will he play in the cup competitions or simply be a traditional number two who only plays when ter Stegen can’t? His transfer will cost between 10 and 12 million euros but Enrique is still hoping he can convince Bravo to stick around.
