Italy have kicked off their Euro 2016 campaign with a dogged 2-0 victory over Marc Wilmots Belgium in a game played yesterday.
The Belgians paraded their all star team with Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard captaining a team with Marouane Fellaini, Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku but they unfortunately did all the playing all night but couldn’t get the penetration against a dogged Italian side who on paper played a 3-5-2 formation but throughout stuck to their 5-3-2 formation with amicable defensive display led by captain Gianluigi Buffon from the back.
The goal owed much to the quick thinking of Bonucci who embarrassed his opposite number Toby Alderweireld with a ball that dropped into Giaccherini’s stride. The Sunderland player smartly brought the ball down, steadied himself in from of Thibaut Coutois and placed the ball to the right hand corner to the delight of the fans.
The Belgians toiled all night but lacked the cutting edge with De Bruyne and Fellaini guilty of missing glittered chances. Mertens came on for Nainggolan who did himself no favours in auditioning for onlooking Chelsea manager to sign him and Origi also came on for Lukaku as well as Carassco also coming on all to no avail.
The second goal came in extra time with Italy scoring on the counter, the ball falling kindly for Candreva who send a delicious mini cross for Graziano Pelle to slam into the net.
