Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has been handed his first call-up to the senior Spain squad.
Herrera, 27, has impressed in recent weeks, having been handed a holding midfield role alongside Paul Pogba by United boss Jose Mourinho.
Herrera, who has played for Spain at Under-20, Under-21 and Under-23 levels, has been called up by Julen Lopetegui for the World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Albania, following the withdrawal of Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez.Basque-born Herrera joins a squad where there are also question marks over the participation of Thiago Alcantara and Saul Niguez, both of whom are struggling with slight problems.

Herrera becomes the 17th Manchester United player to be called up for international duty this month, while becoming the fifth Premier League-based player to join Lopetegui’s squad, alongside Diego Costa, Nolito, David Silva and United teammate David de Gea.
