Just 7-days after a Calabar businessman, was freed from the den of kidnappers, he has reportedly died.

According to his family who made the announcement, the said businessman, Chief Kenneth Ekeanyanwu Okpala, was held in captivity by suspected kidnappers and was only allowed to leave one week later after paying a N10 Million ransom.

A family source who spoke with Vanguard said the deceased died in a private hospital in Calabar, where he had been receiving treatment for injuries inflicted on him by the kidnappers.

One Grace, Chief Okpala’s cousin said:

He was severely tortured by the kidnappers to ask for more money after we had paid N5 million, but he fell sick while with the abductors which made them to release him, so we had to take him to a private hospital. Unfortunately, he died this morning (Tuesday)

Chief Okpala, who hailed from Ngor Okpala, Imo State, was said to have been abducted from his apartment in Calabar in the early hours of last week Tuesday. His kidnap, being a prominent man, was said to have placed fear in so many other popular business men in the area which in turn made them relocate temporarily.
The Cross Rivers State Police spokesman, Mr. John Eluu, Cross Rivers State Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said some arrests has already been made and investigations are still ongoing to put an end to the frequent kidnapping presently sweeping the state.
